Radiator cover with shelf

Why a shelf?

A radiator cover with a shelf is essentially a piece of furniture with dual function. Possibilities:

Load capacity: how much can the wood take?

Our standard shelves of 18 mm solid oak carry, at normal widths up to 140 cm:

For widths above 140 cm we use 22 mm thickness to prevent sagging:

Real-world example: A 120-cm cover with shelf easily carries 30 kg — equivalent to a full collection of hardback books, a vintage lamp, and three potted plants.

Heat protection: does the shelf get hot?

Above a radiator, the shelf will obviously be warmer than the rest of the room. But not as hot as many fear.

Warm — but no issue for solid oak, which is an excellent heat buffer. What you shouldn't place:

Construction: how we make the shelf stable

At BRANDSTIFTER we always connect the shelf to the side panels in two ways:

  1. Mortise joints: Two classic wooden tenons in each side-panel edge
  2. Wood glue: Food-safe white glue on water base

No visible screws. The joint is statically stronger than the wood itself.
