Why a shelf?
A radiator cover with a shelf is essentially a piece of furniture with dual function. Possibilities:
- In the hallway: Key tray, hat shelf, wallet shelf
- In the living room: Plants, picture frames, books, lamps
- In the bedroom: Book stack, water glass, alarm clock
- In the bathroom: Towels, care products (caution: moisture!)
- In the home office: Books, mini printer, globe, decor
Load capacity: how much can the wood take?
Our standard shelves of 18 mm solid oak carry, at normal widths up to 140 cm:
- Static load: 25–35 kg per linear metre
- Point load: up to 8 kg per point
For widths above 140 cm we use 22 mm thickness to prevent sagging:
- Static load: 40–50 kg per metre
- Point load: up to 15 kg per point
Material thickness by size
| Cover width | Recommended shelf thickness |
|---|---|
| up to 100 cm | 18 mm |
| 100–140 cm | 18 mm or 22 mm |
| 140–180 cm | 22 mm |
| 180–220 cm | 22 mm + centre support |
| 220+ cm | 25 mm + two centre supports |
Heat protection: does the shelf get hot?
Above a radiator, the shelf will obviously be warmer than the rest of the room. But not as hot as many fear.
- Radiator surface: 50–70°C
- Shelf 8 cm above: 35–45°C
- Shelf 15 cm above: 28–35°C
Warm — but no issue for solid oak, which is an excellent heat buffer. What you shouldn't place:
- Chocolate, candles (melt!)
- Sensitive plants (orchids — they don't like it)
- Food that must stay cold
- Heat-sensitive electronics
Construction: how we make the shelf stable
At BRANDSTIFTER we always connect the shelf to the side panels in two ways:
- Mortise joints: Two classic wooden tenons in each side-panel edge
- Wood glue: Food-safe white glue on water base
No visible screws. The joint is statically stronger than the wood itself.
With shelf or without?
Clear rule:
- With shelf: In rooms where you frequently place things (hallway, living room, office). Also if the cover should double as a sideboard.
- Without shelf: Pure covering function, minimalist rooms, or if the cover sits under a windowsill (then a second shelf would be redundant).
